Meet the Designer
A love of the sea, travel, and the nostalgia of heirlooms runs through the work of Colby Byrd, founder and designer of Shelton Metal. Drawing on a lifelong background in art, design, and metalsmithing, Colby brings sculptural detail and a playful sensibility to objects made to be worn, used, and treasured. After studying in Italy, he returned to the States and founded Shelton Metal over 13 years ago, beginning with jewelry. Today, his designs extend to the home, bringing that same sense of adornment to the table. Get to know the man behind the metal and the inspirations that shape his collections.

At Shelton Metal, we specialize in custom engagement rings, wedding bands, and recycled heirlooms, with your story at the heart of each design. Our holiday custom jewelry order deadline is November 2nd for guaranteed Christmas delivery within the United States. If you have been considering a custom piece, now is the time to schedule your design consultation. Every treasure is made to order. From our first conversation and design development to sourcing or selecting stones, crafting the setting, and finishing the final details, each step requires time and care. Our holiday deadline allows us to give these pieces the attention they deserve as we prepare them for Christmas gifting. Begin Your Design, Wherever You Are The process starts with a conversation. Fill out the Custom Request Form with a little about what you would like to create, your budget, and your desired timeline. You are welcome to include inspiration images of any jewelry or stones you hope to incorporate by emailing them. For an online or virtual consultation, we will explore your ideas together remotely, discussing design details, materials, and any existing pieces you would like to reimagine. You can begin the custom process from wherever you call home. For an in-showroom consultation, join us by appointment at our Downtown Wilmington showroom. Bring your ideas and any heirloom jewelry or stones you would like us to consider. We will talk through the possibilities together and develop a direction that feels personal to you. Following your consultation, we will work through the design and pricing before moving into production. Each stage brings your idea closer to a finished treasure, ready to become part of someone’s story. Our Custom Fingerprint Collection offers an especially personal gift for the holidays, preserving a loved one’s unique impression in a treasure you can keep close. The process can begin at home: we will share instructions for capturing fingerprints with black ink on white paper, asking for several impressions so we can select the clearest detail. Email your prints for review, and we will guide you through the next steps for your chosen piece. Each fingerprint treasure is made to order, so please allow time for both gathering your prints and the careful work of bringing your piece to life.
